Garlic's allicin, a sulfur-containing chemical found in garlic, has long been supposed to play a major role in the claimed advantages of garlic. Allicin gives garlic its distinctive scent.
    • The substances in alpine wild garlic leaf (Allium ursinum) and garlic bulb (Allium sativum) are also found in common garlic.
